Sexually Transmitted Disease or Genital Infections

Genital infections can be diagnosed and treated at the surgery. It is preferable to make a morning appointment and to bring along a fresh sample of urine in a white topped bottle provided by the surgery. You should not have passed urine in the previous hour. It does not have to be the first sample of the day but does have to be the first part of the urine passed. If you have cystitis (burning feeling passing urine or frequent passing of urine) we will also need a fresh mid stream sample of urine in a red topped bottle with crystals in.

However if you suspect sexually transmitted infection or problematic genital infection (you do not have to be having sex) you can as an alternative go direct to a Genito Urinary Medicine (GUM for short) clinic at one of the local hospitals.
The service is confidential. There are walk in clinics but it is best to phone beforehand for appointments or to check times.
